She is Poppy. And her fans are called "Poppy Seeds."

But exactly who (or what) is Poppy?

NPR's Scott Simon endeavored to find out.

"I'm from the Internet," Poppy tells Simon on NPR's Weekend Edition Saturday.

Poppy posted her first YouTube video in 2015 after teaming up with self-proclaimed director Titanic Sinclair. The video is titled "Poppy Eats Cotton Candy," and she does just that. The bleach-blond woman sits in front of a white backdrop eating baby-pink cotton candy for one minute and 22 seconds.

Her most popular video, "I'm Poppy," has garnered 12 million views. It's 10 minutes of Poppy saying her name over and over again.

Poppy's real name is Moriah Pereira, and according to sleuthing by dedicated fans, she is from Nashville, Tenn. Sinclair's given name is Corey Mixter. But neither artist wants to reveal their past. When Simon asks whether she knows Moriah Pereira, Poppy tells him, "I don't know who that is ... I'm Poppy."

In all, Poppy and Sinclair have created 300 videos together. Most are less than a minute long. The videos usually feature Poppy in an avant-garde costume, whimsically contemplating the problems of the world. "I am an important artist. And I make art. Therefore my opinion matters," she says in one.

"So many people have asked me if I am in a cult. I'm not in a cult," she insists in another.

For many, the videos are mesmerizing; Poppy's soothing voice and the new age electronic music underneath sweeps viewers from one video to the next.

Poppy's real passion is her music. She has even won a Streamy Award — which honors the best in online video and the creators behind it — for Breakthrough Artist. Poppy released her first full-length album in October titled Poppy.Computer. The album closely follows the themes of her YouTube videos: technology, fame and navigating youth in the Internet age. Sinclair tells Simon that the album is heavily influenced by the bright colors and happy sounds of Japanese kawaii culture.

One of the album's featured tracks, "Computer Boy," recalls Poppy's intimate relationship with an online love. "The only thing that brings me joy is my computer boy," she declares over pulsing electronic beats. Another track, "Let's Make a Video," is an upbeat ode to the YouTube channel that has built her career. But it's also strangely melancholic, a rumination on the shallowness of social media culture. "Pop Music" rounds out the album. It's the only acoustic track, celebrating pop music's ability to move people.

As Wired writer Lexi Pandell noted in a profile of Poppy earlier this year, "Poppy's fans seem to hold two conflicting opinions about her: that she can parody YouTubers and bubblegum pop stars and be venerated like the very celebrities she lampoons."

Poppy tells Simon, "I hope I'm the most special part of [my fans'] day. I want them to feel like I'm taking them to a part of their imagination they've never experienced. Poppy's world is a magical place, and it's the most free part of the entire universe."

Sinclair helps Poppy make that world. Fans call him a creative mastermind. Critics call him a cult leader. Sinclair often criticizes other artists on Twitter for their lack of authenticity. He tells Simon, for example, that Taylor Swift's new album Reputation is overly manufactured. "You have all these trust fund kids who bought their way basically into the business and their songs are all about how rugged they are," he says.

Another interesting factor about Poppy is her fraught relationship with Charlotte, a brunette mannequin with a computer-generated voice featured in many of her videos. Charlotte sings along with Poppy in "My Style," calling Poppy "an object" and a "pet." Charlotte tries to copy Poppy, a metaphor perhaps for those pop artists that Sinclair calls phony.

Poppy insists that there are hidden messages in her videos: triangles and numbers that allude to the Illuminati. Her "Poppy Seed" fans spend hours trying to make sense of them, according to Wired. Her fans dedicate their Twitter profile photos to her. They create videos like "Poppy's Hidden Conspiracy EXPOSED!" in which they have uncovered old yearbook photos and home videos of the singer.

Poppy subió su primer video en YouTube en el 2015 después de hacer equipo con el auto proclamado director Titanic Sinclair. El video es titulado “Poppy comiendo un algodón de azúcar”, en donde ella es lo único que hace. La chica rubia esta frente a un fondo blanco comiendo solamente un algodón de azúcar por lo menos un minuto con 22 segundos.

Su video mas popular titulado “Soy Poppy” ha generado 12 millones de visitas. En 10 minutos de Poppy diciendo repetidas veces su nombre.

El verdadero nombre de Poppy es Moriah Perira y de acuerdo con sus fans más fanáticos, ella es de Nashville, Tennessee. El nombre de Sinclar es Corey Mixter. Pero ni siquiera los artistas desean revelar su paso. Cuando Simon pregunta si ella conoce a Moriha Perira, Poppy le responde #Yo no se quien es .. yo soy Poppy”-

En todo esto, Poppy y Sinclar han creado 300 videos juntos. Mucho de los cuales no duran más de dos minutos. Estos videos usualmente tienen a Poppy en algún tipo de vestuario vanguardista y de manera enigmática reflexiona sobre los problemas de el mundo. “Soy una artista importante. Que hace arte por lo tanto mi opinión importa” Dice en uno de sus videos.

“Me preguntan frecuentemente si yo estoy en algún culto. Yo no estoy en un culto” Ella comenta en otro video.

Para algunos sus videos son hipnóticos con la suave voz de Poppy y la música electrónica New Age mantiene a los cibernautas en espera de ver su siguiente video.

La verdadera pasión de Poppy es la música. Ella gano un Streamy award un premio que se le da a los mejores videos en internet y a sus creadores o artistas sobresalientes. Poppy realizo su primer álbum titulado Poppy.computer. El álbum tiene sus temas muy apegados a los de sus videos que hablan acerca de: Tecnología, fama y los internautas jóvenes en la era del internet. Sinclar cuenta a Simon que el álbum es fuertemente influenciado por los colores brillantes y alegres sonidos de la cultura kawaii japonesa.

Computer boy, es una canción en su álbum que remarca la relación íntima de Poppy con un amor de internet. “La única cosa que me trae gusto es mi chico computadora” ella lo declara con algunos ritmos electrónicos. En otra canción “hagamos un video”, es una oda optimista a su canal de YouTube que comenzó su carrera, PERO TAMBIEN es extrañamente melancólico, una rumia sobre lo superficial de la cultura de los medios sociales. La música pop es algo que se encuentra mucho en su álbum. Es la única canción acústica, donde se remarca como la música pop maneja masas.

Como la escritora de Wired, Lexi Pandell, señaló en una nota de Poppy a principios de este año, "los fanáticos de Poppy parecen tener dos opiniones dificultosas sobre ella primero que puede parodiar a los YouTubers y las estrellas del pop mediáticas y ser venerada como las celebridades que aclama".

Poppy le dice a Simon, yo espero ser la parte mas especial en el dia de mis fans. Y quiero que ellos sientan que estoy siendo parte de su imaginación que nunca han experimentado. El universo de Poppy es un lugar mágico, y la parte mas libre de todo el universo.

Sinclar ayuda a Poppy a crear ese mundo. Los fans lo califican como una mente maestra. Los críticos lo llaman un líder de un culto. Sinclair algunas veces critica artistas en su Twitter de su falta de autenticidad, Por ejemplo, le comento a Simon que el álbum de Taylor Swift Reputation está excesivamente pre fabricado.

Otra cosa interesante es la relación que existe entre Poppy y Charlotte, una maniquí castaña con una voz generada por computadora la cual aparece en varios de sus videos. Charlotte canta con Poppy canciones como “ es mi estilo” llamando a Poppy que es un objeto y una mascota. Charlotte intenta copiar a Poppy, una metáfora tal vez para aquellos artistas pop que Sinclair llama falsos.

Poppy insiste en que hay mensajes ocultos en sus videos: triángulos y números que aluden a los Illuminati. Sus fans de "Semillas de Poppy" pasan horas tratando de darles sentido, según Wired. Sus fans le dedican sus fotos de perfil de Twitter a ella. Crean videos como "Poppy, mensajes ocultos, relevados!" En el que han descubierto viejas fotos del anuario y videos caseros de la cantante.
